DIGITAL STORYTELLING

Teaching through the use of videos has always been an interesting and exciting adventure for students. Videos can spark a conversation, bring a lesson to life, engage students, and take them where they cannot go physically.

There are lots of different ways in which teachers can use videos in the classroom, but here are a few ideas :
Record Class Presentations – Record classroom presentations. The lessons will be a great resource for the students to look back on what was said in class. Make the lessons available to the students and show the best one’s to  students in coming years of project should be.

Video Projects – Nothing motivates a student like using exciting technology to create something amazing! Let the students have the option of using that excitement in their projects for the class. If their work is posted online they will also be able to share it with family and friends.

Instructional Videos – If there are special topics you may want to teach, it  that be useful to take a little field trip. Go out a few days before and record an on site explanation of the topic. This works very well with technical vocational studies and many other subjects too.

Video Blogs – Create a class blog for the class and have your students record their reactions to  assignments (critiques) and post them on the blog. Give them other specific assignments and have them post those on the blog.

Use Online Video Already Available – There are lot of videos already available on the internet in all sorts of topic areas. Use the video as part of the lesson. It will increase the student’s ability to remember what the lesson is about and encourage them to seek out educational video’s as well. As more teachers get into making video’s the amount of resources available will be increased.

Below is a video on The Rights of a Child as it relates to corporal/physical punishment

REFLECTION

The mini movie  produced was done via Windows Movie Maker. It is geared towards sensitising teachers and parents  that such practices, can be labeled as child abuse. It describes what is  involved in corporal punishment, shows the long-term effects of it and explains how other  effective alternative forms of discipline can be used.
Selecting the appropriate photos, video and music combination was a tedious task and also a bit challenging. Getting the timing for each slide took some patience also.
Some overall improvements could be made especially in the flow of the video transitions and the sound of the narrative at the beginning .

A child has a right to be happy and loved,
Be safe and protected from harm,
Be cradled in arms that will sacrifice all,
Be free from all stress and alarm
.
