IMPROVING CLASSROOM INSTRUCTION and COMMUNICATION THROUGH WEBLOGS

ICTs are fast becoming the new, exciting and effective ways of transferring information in the teaching/learning environment.

Most schools are encouraged to use the new information and communication technologies (ICTs) which include ipods, ipads, tablets, as well as the newer types of technology to teach students the knowledge and skills they need in this era. The teaching profession is rapidly changing from an emphasis on teacher-centered, instruction to student -centered and interactive learning environments.

Here are a few suggestions as to how instruction and communication can be improved in the classroom:

  •  Teachers should first carefully determine the specific learning outcomes that are desired, then select which tool, if any, is necessary in the learning process.

  • The blogs can be used  for students to summarize what they have learnt  as well as for critiquing . When students begin to 'voice' their thoughts, they become more empowered and confident.

  •    Allow  students to have the opportunity to link with other students around the world enabling them to learn and share new ideas so that they can get new perspectives on varying topics.

  •     Teachers may use the blog as an instructional tool for students who are unavoidably absent from class. This makes it easy for everyone involved communicate at any time and in any place.
Above is a chart which shows all the possible benefits of the use of weblogs in the classroom

  2. I particularly liked the idea where you made mention of students being able to link up with other students around the world and this can be done right there in the classroom. A way to this is by video chat (skype, ovoo, imo, etc).

  3. Hi Annick. Thank you for your appreciation of my blog and for highlighting specific apps that can be used to do video chats. I am familiar with Skype and Ovoo but Imo is new to me. I will do some research on imo and learn how it can be used.
